| The Harney Mansion - A Step Back In Time |
| This historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings was first erected in 1856 by Dr. A. Leffingwell. This portion is now the South Wing as in 1872 General William S. Harney duplicated the same material and design to further add to the existing building in 1872. The General used this building as his Summer Home until 1884 when he moved to Florida. In 1896 the building was purchased by Theodore Hinchcliff and it stayed in the Hinchcliff Family until 1960 when his daughter Lucy Hinchcliff Riggans sold it to Leo Hollander and his wife. After sitting vacant for a number of years, the Hollander family gave it to the William S. Harney Historical Society in the early 1980's. In April of 1984 is was placed on the national Register of Historic Places as the Major General William S. Harney Summer Home. After this Historical Society disbanded in the early 1990's, the building was given to the City of Sullivan. In one final effort to save it, the city then deeded the property to "The Friends of General Harney House, Inc." which in 1998 changed their name to the "Harney Mansion Foundation". Since owning this historical building the "Harney Mansion Foundation" has been moving forward with the overdue preservation and repairs this building has needed for decades through grants and private contributions. Since their ownership, a new temporary roof has been erected along with the completion of a very large percentage of the exterior tuck pointing and other work. Their work has thus far stabilized the building while awaiting further needed funds to initiate the many projects required to fully renovate and fully preserve it. Your help is needed and would be greatly appreciated. A contribution of any amount can be sent directly and payable to: The Harney Mansion Foundation P.O. Box 398 Sullivan, MO 63080 Also any donations of needed supplies and/or general to skilled labor to aid in the restoration would also be greatly appreciated. If interested in assisting then please email MPR at: greg@paranormaltaskforce.com for further details and information for direct contact with the Foundation. The main building sits in the center of approximately 5 acres of ground with a lot of old oak trees. The brown stone 2-story building sits facing west. On the east (rear) there are the rubble remains of what was a large kitchen. There was found an old stone. With the engraving of Gauel- Greenlee And a date of 1721-18 the rest was not readable. A full detailed history with pictures will be coming to this area of the website soon. If you have any old pictures, drawings or history of this building that you would like to see here then please email: greg@paranormaltaskforce.com |
