This historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings was first erected in 1856 by Dr. A. Leffingwell. This portion is now the South Wing as in 1872 General William S. Harney duplicated the same material and design to further add to the existing building in 1872. The General used this building as his Summer Home until 1884 when he moved to Florida. In 1896 the building was purchased by Theodore Hinchcliff and it stayed in the Hinchcliff Family until 1960 when his daughter Lucy Hinchcliff Riggans sold it to Leo Hollander and his wife. After sitting vacant for a number of years, the Hollander family gave it to the William S. Harney Historical Society in the early 1980's. In April of 1984 is was placed on the national Register of Historic Places as the Major General William S. Harney Summer Home. After this Historical Society disbanded in the early 1990's, the building was given to the City of Sullivan. In one final effort to save it, the city then deeded the property to "The Friends of General Harney House, Inc." which in 1998 changed their name to the "Harney Mansion Foundation". Since owning this historical building the "Harney Mansion Foundation" has been moving forward with the overdue preservation and repairs this building has needed for decades through grants and private contributions. Since their ownership, a new temporary roof has been erected along with the completion of a very large percentage of the exterior tuck pointing and other work. Their work has thus far stabilized the building while awaiting further needed funds to initiate the many projects required to fully renovate and fully preserve it. Your help is needed and would be greatly appreciated. A contribution of any amount can be sent directly and payable to: The Harney Mansion Foundation P.O. Box 398 Sullivan, MO 63080 Also any donations of needed supplies and/or general to skilled labor to aid in the restoration would also be greatly appreciated. The main building sits in the center of approximately 5 acres of ground with a lot of old oak trees. The brown stone 2-story building sits facing west. On the east (rear) there are the rubble remains of what was a large kitchen. There was found an old stone. With the engraving of Gauel- Greenlee And a date of 1721-18 the rest was not readable. A full detailed history with pictures will be coming to this area of the website soon. There have been eyewitness accounts of seeing anomalous moving lights and full figured glowing apparitions from the outside while passing by or looking in prior to the placement of boards over the window areas. Also, others who use to illegally visit the Mansion while it was vacant and not secured from such visits have reported hearing footsteps and voices while inside the historical building when no one else was present. For this investigation several video recorders with and without infra red extenders and night shot capabilities were used. A CCTV system and VCR recorder was also used along with various digital still cameras, digital audio recorders, EMF meters and IR Thermometers throughout this investigation. The investigative group gathered at the site between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m., with a couple arriving later due to storms. Judy of the Harney Mansion Foundation gave everyone a tour and brief hisotry of the site before equipment as put into operation. Just after dark the first lock down of about 45 minuets was preformed and a second was done about 22:30 hours. There were limited electricity only 5 bulbs. A base line of EMF was conducted and revealed that there was no EMF. A base line of temp was also conducted with a digital IR thermometers which gave an approximated ambient temp of 65 on the main floor. 1. The group experience a 15 degree temperature drop in the parlor room during an EVP session along with various knocking and popping noises. 2. The scent of a sweet smell like lilac or honeysuckle very faint was reported by some. 3. Some investigators reported the smell of pipe or cigar tobacco burning. This odor came and went and was most prevalent during the EVP sessions. 4. Some investigators reported clearly hearing footsteps coming from the second floor when no human or animal was up there. 5. Batteries in some investigative equipment and lights drained at an unexplainable accelerated rate. Several digital and film still pictures were taken by various investigators along with several hours worth of video and audio. Preliminary Analysis Various notable audio and video clips have been identified for further analysis. Final Analysis & Results One notable video clip with an anomalous light manifesting and fading near a tripod has been posted as well as an unexplainable photograph with an anomaly within a mirror. The combination of human experiences with the notable and unexplainable video clip and photograph indicate that there is a good probability that paranormal activity is present at this location. However, further follow up investigations will have to be conducted to determine such. (follow up investigations were conducted on July 21, 2007 & September 29, 2007, results will be posted in the near future.) Gregory Myers, President Paranormal Task Force |
