Local weather conditions for this investigation for the time period of 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. was clear, winds from the South 7 mph becoming calm, temperatures started at 72 degrees Fahrenheit and dropped to 54 degrees Fahrenheit by 1:00 a.m., dew point was 39 rising to 43, barometric pressure ranged from 30.16 rising to 30.18 and Relative Humidity was 30% rising to 66%. The current business website can be found at: www.sweetmemoriesshop.com A detailed history of this property can be found at: http://carrollscorner.net/SweetMemories.htm Sweet Memories Sandwich and Ice Cream Shop is in a beautiful two story house located in Potosi‘s historic district. Built in the 1800s, it still maintains its historic charm. The history of this property goes back to 1798. It was part of the land that Moses Austin acquired in Spanish Grant #430. Garrett I. Van Allen, one of the first prosecuting attorneys of Washington County, his wife, Harriett, and their several children moved into the house in 1869. In 1871, Harriett died in the house at the age of 44. She is buried just down the street in the Presbyterian Cemetery. Garrett died in March of 1899 at the age of 75. Throughout the following years, many families have lived in the building. The current owners, David and Cindy Merx, operate a catering and baking business as well as a sandwich and ice cream shop there. The resident ghost of Sweet Memories, fondly referred to as “Harriett,” is believed to be Harriett Van Allen. Although Harriett is a friendly ghost, she can be a bit unnerving at times. Her mischievous antics usually consist of knocking things off walls and shelves, finishing puzzles, opening and closing doors, hiding objects, and putting in a glimpse of an appearance. For this investigation video recorders with and without infra red extenders and night shot capabilities were used. Various digital still cameras, EMF meters, voice recorders, IR Thermometers and radiation detectors were also utilized throughout the investigation. The team met up about 6 p.m. at this fine establishment and was served a fabulous dinner by Cindy the proprietor then the investigation started and utilized both interactive and passive methods. The investigation concluded about 1 a.m. During this investigation investigators experienced the following: 1. A two dimensional shadow anomaly was observed. 2. Erratic unexplainable temperature drops of 15 to 18 degrees were noted in the nearby cemetery. 3. A human like anomaly was observed from the outside in a rear second floor back room which was used for storage. No remarkable evidence was captured. Although there were some notable human experiences, this alone does not sufficiently substantiate a haunting. Remarkable evidence would have to be captured on equipment to be able to substantiate such paranormal activity. A follow up investigation in hopes of capturing evidence is recommended.
